Does a Chimney Sweep Inspect the Chimney Exterior?

What Homeowners Should Expect During the Appointment

Yes, a chimney professional will generally examine the readily accessible exterior when an inspection is included. However, sweeping and inspection are different services. Sweeping removes soot, creosote and debris, while an inspection evaluates the condition of the fireplace, chimney and venting system.

When scheduling a chimney sweep in Louisville KY or Lexington KY, ask whether a Level 1 inspection is included.

What Exterior Chimney Components Are Checked?

The technician may look for visible problems involving:

  • Cracked or spalling bricks and deteriorated mortar
  • A cracked chimney crown
  • A missing, damaged or rusted chimney cap
  • Visible flashing defects or water entry
  • Rust or holes in a chase cover
  • Leaning, movement or structural damage
  • Staining or other signs of moisture

This is not a complete roof inspection, and concealed damage cannot be identified through a visual exterior check.

Will the Chimney Sweep Get on the Roof?

Not necessarily. Some chimneys can be viewed from the ground, a ladder or another safe location. Roof access depends on height, pitch, weather and fall hazards. The technician should explain any access limitation.

Is an Exterior Check Part of a Level 1 Inspection?

A Level 1 inspection is generally appropriate when the system has not changed and there are no known problems. It covers readily accessible portions of the chimney, fireplace and venting system.

The Chimney Safety Institute of America explains that chimneys, fireplaces and vents should be inspected annually, with cleaning performed when necessary.

A Level 2 inspection may be recommended after a chimney fire, storm, property transfer or change in the system. It includes a video scan of the flue.

Why Is the Exterior Inspection Important?

Kentucky rain and freeze-thaw cycles can damage masonry. Crown cracks, failed mortar and damaged caps allow water into the system. Finding them early may prevent larger repairs and interior leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every chimney sweep include an exterior inspection?

Not automatically. Service packages vary, so confirm that an inspection is included when scheduling.

Can a chimney be inspected without getting on the roof?

Some exterior components can be evaluated from a safe location, but limited access may prevent a close view of the crown, cap or flashing.

Does a chimney sweep inspect the flashing?

A technician may identify visible flashing damage or signs of leakage, but this does not replace a complete roofing inspection.

Will the Chimney Sweep Get on the Roof?

Not necessarily. Roof access depends on the chimney’s height, roof pitch, weather and other safety hazards. If the chimney cannot be safely accessed, our technicians can use a drone to fly around the chimney and take detailed pictures of visible exterior components, including the masonry, chimney crown, cap, chase cover and flashing.

Drone photography allows us to document many exterior conditions without placing a technician on an unsafe roof. However, it cannot reveal concealed damage or completely replace hands-on access when closer evaluation is necessary.

Can a chimney be inspected without getting on the roof?

Yes. When roof access is unsafe, our technicians can use a drone to photograph and examine visible portions of the chimney exterior. Some conditions may still require closer access or additional evaluation.
