How Much Does a Fireplace Liner Cost to Install?

A professionally installed fireplace chimney liner typically costs $5,000 to $10,000. Larger fireplace flues, difficult access, insulation, removal of damaged clay tiles and additional chimney repairs can push the price toward the upper end. An inspection is the only reliable way to price a specific chimney.

What Does the Installation Price Include?

A complete stainless-steel relining estimate may include the liner, connectors, top plate, cap, insulation and labor. The chimney must be inspected, measured and cleaned before installation.

What Affects Chimney Liner Cost?

The main pricing factors include:

  • Chimney height and liner diameter
  • Straight flue or flue with bends and offsets
  • Wood, gas or another connected appliance
  • Flexible or rigid stainless-steel liner
  • Required insulation
  • Roof pitch and chimney access
  • Removal of damaged clay flue tiles
  • Firebox, smoke chamber or masonry repairs

An open fireplace generally needs a larger liner than a wood stove. Larger liners use more material and can be harder to guide through an older chimney. If clay tiles leave too little room, technicians may need to remove them first.

Why Does Liner Sizing Matter?

A liner that is too small can restrict exhaust. One that is too large may not maintain proper temperature and draft. It must also be approved for the fuel and appliance.

NFPA 211 addresses chimney, fireplace and venting-system requirements. A Level 2 inspection, including a video scan of the flue, is commonly performed when a chimney is being relined or the fuel-burning appliance changes.

Is Stainless Steel the Best Option?

Stainless steel can reline a masonry chimney without rebuilding the entire flue. Flexible liner works around offsets; rigid sections may suit a straight flue. Alloy, diameter and insulation depend on the application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a cracked clay liner be repaired instead?

Minor defects may have other repair options, but widespread cracking, missing sections or improper sizing may make relining the better solution.

How long does installation take?

Many straightforward liner installations take one day. Tile removal, repairs or difficult access can extend the work.

Does relining include chimney repairs?

Usually not. Crown, masonry, smoke-chamber or firebox repairs should be listed separately on the estimate.
