MASONRY REPAIR & TUCKPOINTING
Kentucky Winters Find Every Weakness in Mortar. We Fix Them.
Brick and mortar don't last the same amount of time. Mortar joints are meant to be the sacrificial element in masonry, absorbing movement and moisture so the brick doesn't have to. When mortar deteriorates, it gets replaced. That process is tuckpointing. Done correctly, it extends the life of a chimney by decades.
Ace Chimney, Fireplace & Outdoor Living has handled masonry repair and tuckpointing across Louisville, Lexington and surrounding Kentucky communities since 1978. Our CSIA-certified technicians assess the full condition of the chimney before recommending a scope of work. We serve Jefferson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, Bullitt, Nelson, Hardin, Anderson, Woodford and Franklin counties, plus Frankfort, Georgetown and every community in between.
Matching mortar to existing masonry takes skill and experience. The wrong mix — wrong color, wrong hardness — creates new problems faster than it solves old ones. Ace has been doing this long enough to know the difference, and family-owned long enough to care about getting it right. Kentucky's best doesn't patch over a problem and call it done. The estimate is free.
We are the masonry pros and can answer your questions.
What is tuckpointing and when is it necessary?
Tuckpointing is the process of removing deteriorated mortar from chimney joints to a specific depth and replacing it with fresh mortar that matches the original in composition and color. It becomes necessary when mortar joints show cracking, crumbling, erosion, or gaps that allow water to penetrate the masonry. A general rule: when mortar has eroded to a depth of about a quarter inch or more, tuckpointing is warranted. Catching it at that stage is far less expensive than waiting until brick faces begin to spall or structural integrity is compromised.
How do I know if my chimney masonry needs repair?
Cracked or missing mortar joints are the clearest sign from the ground. Others include white staining (efflorescence) on the brick face, which indicates water moving through the masonry; spalling brick faces that are flaking or chipping; and gaps visible between the chimney and the home's exterior. Water in the firebox or on the hearth after heavy rain can also indicate masonry failure rather than a cap or flashing problem. A CSIA-certified technician can differentiate between surface-level issues and deeper structural concerns.
Can damaged chimney masonry be patched, or does it require full rebuilding?
Often, it can be repaired without full rebuilding, which is why early intervention matters. Tuckpointing addresses deteriorated joints without touching sound brick. Spalled or cracked individual bricks can be replaced in kind. Leaning or bowing sections, structural cracks running through brick and mortar together, or chimneys that have shifted significantly may require partial or full rebuilding from a certain point up. Ace Chimney, Fireplace & Outdoor Living assesses each chimney honestly and recommends the minimum scope that actually solves the problem.
Why does mortar matching matter in tuckpointing?
Mortar that is harder than the surrounding brick — a common mistake with modern portland cement mixes applied to older chimneys — causes the brick faces to spall rather than the mortar to absorb stress as intended. Mortar that doesn't match in color is visually obvious and affects curb appeal on historic or distinctive homes. Matching both composition and color requires knowing what the original mortar contains and mixing accordingly. It's detail work that separates a quality repair from one that creates new problems within a few years.
How long does tuckpointing last?
Quality tuckpointing with properly matched mortar lasts 20 to 30 years under normal conditions. Kentucky's climate — particularly the freeze-thaw cycles — sits at the harder end of the spectrum for exterior masonry, so ongoing inspection matters. A chimney that was tuckpointed well 25 years ago may need attention in select areas while the rest remains sound. Annual inspections catch developing joint erosion before it requires a full repoint. Ace Chimney, Fireplace & Outdoor Living has maintained chimneys across Louisville and Lexington long enough to know which areas of a repair tend to show wear first.
